August 08th, 2007: Ed Harris to reinvigorate Western film genre

Just when you think the movie western is still dead, someone comes along with a respected name and an intriguing cast to ride the ranges yet again.Four-time supporting-actor Oscar nominee Ed Harris is set to direct “Appaloosa,” an adaptation of a western novel by mystery scribe Robert B. Parker. Viggo Mortensen and Oscar winner Renee Zellwegger are set to co-star in the film which, according to Variety, is scheduled to begin filming Oct. 1 in New Mexico. It’ll be the second feature directing credit for Harris, who won critical raves for directing and starring in “Pollock”, the 2000 biopic of modern art icon Jackson Pollock. Harris will also appear in front of the camera for “Appaloosa,” a tale of two cowboys hired to bring law and order to a town menaced by a corrupt rancher. Harris and Mortensen worked together on 2005’s “A History of Violence,” which, despite its contemporary setting, was regarded by many reviewers as an exemplar of the lone-gunfighter-with-a-shady-past subgenre that includes “Shane” and most of the 1950s Anthony Mann westerns starring James Stewart.
